  1. A lighthouse is a structure carrying a 
  2. powerful light to warn ships or aeroplanes 
  3. that they are approaching a place (usually 
  4. land) dangerous or important to navigation. 
  5. The light is magnified and directed out to 
  6. the horizon or up to the zenith by a series 
  7. of mirrors or prisms. Increasingly 
  8. lighthouses are powered by electricity and 
  9. automated rather than staffed.
